A quick hypertext drive: I-96 is one of the intrastate Interstates, running entirely in Michigan; it connects the Lake Michigan shore at Muskegon with the eastern end of the state and the Canadian border at Detroit. Outside of the major urban areas of Muskegon, Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Detroit, it runs largely through flat or slightly rolling farmland.

Much of the route has only four lanes, except the I-69 multiplex on the west side of Lansing (with six) and the final 60 miles from Howell to the eastern terminus in Detroit. In fact, the I-275 multiplex in Detroit’s western suburbs carries eight lanes, and an “express-local” setup in northwestern Detroit proper carries 10 lanes. The eastern terminus in Detroit allows eastbound I-96 traffic to exit right to the Ambassador Bridge to go to Canada, or stay left to southbound Interstate 75 to head toward southwestern Detroit and the southern suburbs.
