Deer Detection System, Part #1

A 12-mile section of the Indiana Toll Road (Interstate 80/90) in Steuben County, in the eastern part of the state, utilizes this system in an attempt to prevent vehicle-deer collisions. The cylindrical object just below the “NEXT ½ MILE” sign is an infrared detector programmed to recognize the heat signature of animals; when an animal is detected, the amber light flashes. Due to the highly rural nature of this part of Indiana, solar cells are employed to provide power, and information is transmitted among these devices wirelessly (note the antenna atop this assembly).
