Eastern Continental Divide

The sign at the beginning of the wider grass median tells you that you are leaving the watershed of the Chesapeake Bay as you head west. What it doesn’t tell you is that you’re also crossing the Eastern Continental Divide a line separating the Mississippi River watershed from that of the Great Lakes and Atlantic Ocean. This sign appears just after the Turnpike begins a winding 5½-mile climb to the Allegheny Mountain Tunnel.
